Working by hand with type xeroxed from specimen books, my students explore basic design principles such as symmetry, asymmetry, harmony, contrast, and scale. In the course of this project I encourage students to see letterforms as abstract shapes rather than as concrete units of meaning. In doing so, they are able to focus on the details of the type and to realize the graphic potential of the forms.
